The week in tech layoffs

28 Apr 2010

Although each company has its own rationale for the layoffs, they all seem concerned about staying competitive and maintaining a sound financial structure to weather tough times.

The long and growing list of tech companies planning staff cuts ranges from Pandora to Tesla Motors, leaving a slew of highly trained workers looking for new opportunities:

With financial troubles taking their toll on every sector of the economy, an increasing number of companies are la

Green tech year in preview

26 Apr 2010

A steady climb in energy prices over the past few years prompted consumers to shift to fuel-efficient vehicles and businesses to invest in energy efficiency. That behavior could change after the precipitous drop in oil prices caused by the recession in the second half of 2008.

Meanwhile, some investors in clean-tech start-ups–the front line of energy technology movement–are starting to voice concern over how these companies are being financed.

U.K. operators may strip Skype from Nokia devices

21 Apr 2010

“At Mobile World Congress we announced that Skype would be available on a limited number of N-series devices, beginning with the N97,” the spokesman said. “But there is a possibility it won’t be on every N97.”

The carriers may refuse to carry phones with the Skype feature embedded. Instead, they may insist on selling only Nokia phones without the Skype feature, the Web site said.

The plan is for Skype services to be integrated into the N97 address book,

Need a digital TV coupon Get thee to a wait list

21 Apr 2010

So, if you rely on “rabbit ears” and are still in need of that coupon, here’s what to do. The application process on the TV converter box Web site is still the same, but now, you’ll be put in line for the first-come, first-served waiting list as more funds become available. You’ll also be given a reference number, much like a package-tracking number, that you can input into the Web site to check up on the status and check up on your estimated mailing date.

Toshiba buying Panasonic’s share of LCD venture

21 Apr 2010

The joint venture produced LCDs for small devices like this Toshiba notebook.

The company, established jointly in 2002, currently produces LCD panels for small and medium-size mobile devices, like mobile phones, notebooks, and in-car navigation systems. But it also produces organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, the technology that is considered the next-generation successor to LCD.

In a statement, Toshiba said the business “aims to establish OLEDs

Happiness is…Beatles version of ‘Rock Band’

21 Apr 2010

As a member of the old-people-who-used-to-play-in-rock-bands demographic, I’ve never found much appeal in Rock Band or its competitor/predecessor Guitar Hero. But they obviously have a lot of devoted fans, including, apparently, “the only Beatles in the world” (and the others’ designated heirs).

It doesn’t seem like there’d be much overlap between a band that broke up nearly 40 years ago and a new video game, but generation after generation keeps reclaiming the Beatles as its own

The new privacy officer has also helped consumer-health Web sites develop standards for self-regulation and, as co-chair of the Online Privacy Alliance, has helped the network advertising industry develop its own self-regulations–something the Federal Trade Commission is closely watching. She has represented numerous companies before the FTC and the Justice Department on antitrust issues and possible violations of the FTC Act.

‘60 Minutes’ Inside the Collider

21 Apr 2010

The machine in question is the Large Hadron Collider, the goal of which is to reproduce the conditions from just fractions of a second after the Big Bang. It’ll do so by slamming together subatomic particles at about the speed of light, with scientists poised for a glimpse at the results.

Piracy More Oscar-contending films end up online

21 Apr 2010

A spokeswoman for the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), the trade representing the largest film studios declined to comment directly on Baio’s research. She did say that typically 90 percent of pirated movies that appear online come from camcorders.

Baio also determined through his research that members of the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who vote on the Academy Awards, received viewing copies of 20 of the 26 nominated films. These copies are called screeners.
